Background of the Study

E-government systems have become essential tools for enhancing the efficiency, transparency, and accessibility of public services. These systems use digital platforms to deliver government services, interact with citizens, and manage public sector functions (Oluwatayo et al., 2023). The adoption of e-government systems has been linked to improvements in service delivery, reduced bureaucracy, and increased accountability in government agencies (Kumar & Sharma, 2024). In Nigeria, Taraba State has increasingly embraced digital solutions to streamline administrative processes and enhance the delivery of public services, particularly in sectors like healthcare, education, and law enforcement.

However, despite the widespread adoption of e-government systems, the actual impact on public service efficiency in Taraba State remains underexplored. This study aims to examine how e-government systems have influenced the performance of government agencies in Taraba State, focusing on key indicators of efficiency such as service delivery time, citizen satisfaction, and operational costs (Aminu, 2025). The findings will provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of e-government in improving public service efficiency in the context of a Nigerian state.

Statement of the Problem

While e-government systems have been introduced in many government agencies in Taraba State, there is limited empirical evidence on their actual effects on public service efficiency. Many agencies still face challenges such as technical glitches, resistance to digital transformation, and insufficient infrastructure, which may hinder the desired outcomes (Bello & Usman, 2023). This study seeks to bridge the gap by evaluating the extent to which e-government systems have enhanced service delivery and efficiency within government agencies in Taraba State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the impact of e-government system adoption on the efficiency of government agencies in Taraba State.

2. To identify the challenges faced by government agencies in implementing and maintaining e-government systems.

3. To evaluate the relationship between e-government systems and citizen satisfaction in public service delivery in Taraba State.

Research Questions

1. How do e-government systems influence the efficiency of government agencies in Taraba State?

2. What are the main challenges faced by government agencies in implementing e-government systems?

3. How does the adoption of e-government systems affect citizen satisfaction with public services in Taraba State?

Research Hypotheses

1. H₁: The adoption of e-government systems significantly improves the efficiency of government agencies in Taraba State.

2. H₂: Government agencies in Taraba State face significant challenges in the implementation and maintenance of e-government systems.

3. H₃: The adoption of e-government systems has a positive impact on citizen satisfaction with public services in Taraba State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on government agencies in Taraba State that have implemented e-government systems in the last five years. Data will be collected from government employees, IT specialists, and citizens through surveys and interviews. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and the challenge of obtaining comprehensive data on public service efficiency.

Definitions of Terms

• E-Government Systems: Digital platforms used by government agencies to manage public services and interact with citizens.

• Public Service Efficiency: The ability of government agencies to deliver services in a timely, cost-effective, and transparent manner.

• Citizen Satisfaction: The level of contentment among citizens with the quality and timeliness of public services provided by government agencies.
